Door Grill puts overflow (transfer) grilles above doors for you, using the architectural model you already link into your MEP project.
Pick a door in the linked model and the grille appears above it in your model, at the right height, on the right face of the wall, facing away from the side the door opens to. You never touch the architect’s file, and you never place a grille by hand.
The point of Door Grill is what happens on the next architectural revision. Every grille it places remembers which linked door it belongs to. Run Update All after the architect reissues the link and each grille follows its own door: doors that moved get their grilles moved, new doors get grilles, and doors that disappeared are reported and their grilles selected so you can decide what to do. Nothing is ever deleted behind your back.
It is built for HVAC and MEP engineers who model air transfer between rooms and receive doors as a linked architectural model — where the doors keep moving right up to issue, and the grilles have to keep up.
Key features
- Place a grille above any door picked in a linked model; keep picking, one door after another, until you press Esc.
- Picking a door that already carries a grille re-syncs that grille instead of stacking a second one on top of it.
- Update All — pick one sample door and get grilles above every door of the same family and type on that level of the link.
- The same command re-syncs every grille already in the model with its own door, so it doubles as “bring my model back in line with the architect”. Idempotent — running it twice changes nothing.
- Your own grille family — any Air Terminal family loaded in the project.
- Mounting height in the project’s own units, measured as clear distance from the door head to the bottom of the grille (100 mm by default).
- Orientation follows the door’s opening direction automatically, including doors the architect has flipped since the last issue; one option reverses it.
- Grille depth follows the host wall’s thickness when the family exposes a “Wall thickness” instance parameter.
- Every run ends with a report — created, repositioned, unchanged, skipped, and any door no longer present in the link — and is a single undo step.
How to use it
- 1Link the architectural model into your MEP project, and load your overflow grille family (an Air Terminal family) into the project.
- 2On the Vixeldorf ribbon tab, Door Grill panel, click Options — choose your grille family, set the mounting height above the door head, choose orientation, and decide whether Update All may restore manually deleted grilles. (The first run without a family chosen opens this dialog automatically.)
- 3Click Place Grille and pick a door in the linked model — a grille is placed above it. Keep picking doors; press Esc when done.
- 4Or click Update All and pick one sample door: grilles are placed above every door of the same family and type on that level, with a report of created / repositioned / skipped.
- 5After an architectural revision, reload the link and run Update All again — moved doors get their grilles repositioned, new doors get grilles, and grilles whose door is gone are counted and left selected for review.
- 6Repeat as often as you like — a run that finds nothing reports “Unchanged” and modifies nothing. Every run is one undoable transaction, and nothing is ever deleted automatically.
